DirectX 12 is another of the sleeper technologies within Windows 10. It gets mentioned a lot, but not a lot of the benefit is visible to users right now.
Expect that to change over the course of the year, as games that use it arrive. To help kickstart the year, Microsoft will be hoping to make a big noise at Game Developer Conference in March.
The major gathering of coding talent and technologies takes place at Moscone Center in San Francisco, from March 14-16.
Microsoft will be sponsoring and chairing one session. Led by Max McMullen, principal development lead , it will focus on “DirectX 12 Advancements.”
It will show coders and game development teams learn the best ways to unlock improved performance through DirectX 12’s features.
Using real-world examples, they will demonstrate how to port games to DX 12. Then get it up and running rapidly.

Intel will also be hosting a session, called “In the Trenches: Optimizing UE4 for Intel.” with Intel and Epic coders showing how using Unreal Engine 4 works best on Intel platforms when used with DirectX 12.
From improving frame rates to adding extra details in games, there are huge benefits, but developers, large and small, need to get with the program.
Missing from that list is AMD. They were supposed to benefit most from DirectX 12, with improved performance on existing GPUs, but there seems to have been next to no hype in the gaming market.
AMD will be among the hardware firms at GDC with boot camps and tutorials. They will focus on DirectX 12, showing off new programming models, hardware capabilities and advanced rendering techniques for the best looking results.
All of this effort should see speedier results from developers. As 2016’s systems hit the market with DX 12 capable GPUs then gamers and general users will get more interested in the technology.
