Last year’s arrival of DisplayPort 1.3 technology means PC monitors are about to get a lot bigger as they meet TV sizes and 4K plus resolutions.

While your typical office or home office user will remain unmoved. For the rest of us, it means you might need a bigger desk.

For gamers, the arrival of 32-inch and larger displays means that big screen experience without downgrading to a 1080p output on the TV. For power users it could mean less use of zoom or squinting at a smaller monitor.

LG and Samsung will lead the charge of super-sized displays, with models arriving in summer and fall. Expect other brands to follow and price competition to stiffen through 2017.

Sizing up the Monitors

LG Display’s new line up focuses on the nearly borderless displays, ranging from 23.8-inches up to 37.5-inches to suit most tastes and budgets. The upcoming LM375UW1 IPS panel opts for a 2:4:1 aspect ratio with a matching resolution of 3840 x 1600 resolution in that 37.5″ space.

That will make it perfect for playing 4K Blu-ray discs on as it matches the super high definition BD content exactly. With a 14ms response rate, 1000:1 contrast ratio and wide viewing angles. No word on ports and inputs yet, but power users will find it extremely easy on the eye.

Samsung Display too is pivoting its panel technology for the PC monitor market, with a range of models including larger curved screens up to 31.5-inches, with 2560 x 1440 resolution and a snappy 144Hz refresh due in Q3 2016.

Word is there could also be 41-inch and 49-inch panels coming to the PC market for those with either very poor eyesight or very large wallets.

And for those wondering about when the 8K generation of screens will arrive, Samsung is supposed to have a 31.5-inch 7680 x 4230 resolution display for 8K4K compatibility.

Windows 10 supports up to 8K resolution, although don’t expect much content for it in terms of videos or capable graphics cards any time soon.  You can read more on the upcoming displays and road maps from other vendors here.
