It was reported in January that Windows 10’s new browser, Microsoft Edge could be storing your private browsing data.
According to a recent report from Forensic Focus browsing done in Microsoft Edge’s InPrivate mode can be easily recovered as InPrivate mode stores the sites you visit in the “Container_n” table (in the WebCache file) which also stores your general browsing history in Edge.
Then Microsoft said:
“We recently became aware of a report that claims InPrivate tabs are not working as designed, and we are committed to resolving this as quickly as possible.”
2 weeks later it seems Microsoft has kept their promise. The latest cumulative update 1586.104, or KB3135173 has the following changelog as one of the line items:
“Fixed issue with Microsoft Edge browser caching visited URLs while using InPrivate browsing.”
The rapid fix is certainly good news, but we wonder how such an issue slipped through in the first instance, given the amount of auditing the security hardened browser must have undergone on its way to the market.
