Other, as in third-party. As part of the Family Settings in Windows 10. For those that want to use this feature, the only recommended choices are Edge and Internet Explorer.
We first heard about this a while back, and now Redmond has officially made the change.
Family filters on Windows devices are now blocking some third-party web browsers, and although it is not clear when this change took place, the report reveals that browsers like Chrome and Firefox are now blocked by default.
And that is due to the lack of web filtering options that they fail to provide, which help parents set restrictions for their kids.
Redmond states that this is all happening because it wants to offer kids better protection online. And interestingly, the company does not mention the name of the browsers that are being blocked, only saying that the new policy is blocking most of them.
As Microsoft explains (http://account.microsoft.com/family/faq) in the ‘Safer web browsing’ section of its updated policy:
“Most commonly used browsers don’t have web filtering. To keep your children safer, we’ll automatically block these browsers on their devices. You can always choose to allow your child to use other browsers.”
Of course, it is still possible to whitelist banned browsers, and parents can adjust the filter to allow for browsers like Chrome, Firefox and Safari, if they so desire.
Hopefully, Microsoft provides a full list of the browsers that are getting banned here, soon.
