Redmond continues to conquer more Android phones, as Xiaomi has installed Cortana on the Mi MIX, their shiny new handset that will come with Microsoft apps preinstalled.

The software titan is very committed to move beyond Windows, and expand its software and services to other platforms as well. Part of this strategy is bringing more of its apps on Android devices that are sold worldwide.

In fact, the company has signed licensing deals with a number of large Android handset makers, including market leader Samsung. Which has resulted in apps like Skype, Word and Outlook being available right out the box on a growing number of phones.

And now we can add another company to the list.

Xiaomi has just agreed to preinstall Cortana on its recently released handset and will offer its users access to Microsoft’s digital assistant as default.

The popular Chinese vendor is already a Microsoft partner, so this new development is not surprising.

And quite in line with what Windows boss Terry Myerson has stated on several occasions that Microsoft wants to grow as a services company, and help its customers regardless of the fact that they are using a different mobile platform:

Quote
“Our company will be pragmatic and embrace other mobile platforms with our productivity services, device management services, and development tools – regardless of a person’s phone choice, we want everyone to be able to experience what Microsoft has to offer them.”

As for the Android version of Cortana, the software titan has added new features to the service in recent months, including support for its Band 2 wearable, photo reminders and even to-do lists.
