Say, what’s the big idea? Microsoft has paused Windows 10 Insider Preview releases for PCs for those in the Fast and Slow rings of the program, in preparation of the Unified Update Platform.

This is the secret behind the company only releasing a mobile build this week.

Apparently, Redmond wants to overhaul its delivery mechanism for future updates, and this is part of the UUP initiative that the software titan announced last month. The goal is to just deliver a differential download package containing only the changes that have been made since the last update for a device.

Rather than a full build, so to speak.

The UUP made its debut on Windows 10 Mobile with the release of build 14959 in November, and now the company is integrating it into the PC builds too.

For this to happen, though, the company has confirmed that it is going to pause all PC builds for both the Fast and Slow rings starting this evening — Friday, December 2, 2016, that be.

According to Windows Insider Program chief Dona Sarkar, Microsoft will begin filing the latest builds via UUP, starting with internal rings first and then to Insiders. While Senior Program Manager Brandon Le Blanc says that Redmond aims to roll out its next PC builds to Insiders using the UUP framework.

Ambitious, but we’ll just have to wait it out for now.

A pause, it is.
