Mac OS X 10.6.6 contains hidden Boot Camp changes

Some subtle changes to Boot Camp were made with Mac OS X 10.6.6, a tip notes. When creating a Windows partition the tool now asks for an "authentic installation disc of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate." Windows XP and Vista are no longer mentioned, suggesting that Apple is effectively dropping support for them.

Boot Camp is now also said to require the download of "additional software designed specifically for each Mac," consisting of drivers for components like keyboards, trackpads and webcams. Users are in fact told not to use software from a Mac OS X install disc or another computer. The change is likely meant to ensure that Mac owners install the absolute latest drivers on their machines, rather than outdated ones which could produce unnecessary troubleshooting burdens.
