Use Gmail to Call around the World
« on: August 06, 2011, 05:50:11 PM »
Google announced that it added support for hundreds of countries to its in-mail calling service feature. It also lowered its international per minute call rates. Calling from Gmail is the green phone icon in the chat section of the Gmail page. It was added to Google’s free email service a year ago.

Calling from Gmail is received well. A million calls were made within 24 hours after it was launched. But the feature is still unnoticed by most of the 200 million Gmail users. It lets users make free calls to the United States and Canada and inexpensive calls to phones in other countries. It could be used to call landlines and mobile phones.

Google updated the service this week to add 38 new languages, including Turkish, Portuguese, Serbian and Vietnamese. Plus, the search engine lowered the calling rates to 150 countries. Gmail calling rates are half of that of Skype.

Callers can buy calling credits from Google using U. S. dollars, Canadian dollars, British pounds or euros. This service is useful for people travelling abroad. People can call to the United States as long as there’s a Wi-Fi connection.

Calling from Gmail also lets users handle multiple calls. A user on a call can hold the first call and take a second call. Switching between calls is easy as pressing the Resume button.
