The New Windows 8 Explorer UI Looks Like a Mess
« on: August 30, 2011, 07:32:11 PM »
There are parts of Windows 8 that look really amazing (like this, holy shit!). But now, Microsoft offers up a video of the new Explorer UI. More functional, perhaps. But it doesn't look so great.

It's worth sayin that the Windows 7 Explorer UI had gotten minimal to the point where it wasn't simple anymore. But pulling a complete 180 and making the menu bar items permanently visible, with icons sprawled all over the place, isn't exactly the best solution either.

Microsoft says they're reimagining with Windows 8 and the Explorer UI. Yet, beyond the ribbon of commands, the fundamental act of navigating in explorer is unchanged. And though these icons are plastered across the top of the Explorer window, there are still more dropdown menus, secondary tabs and scroll boxes. Blah.

It's a kitchen sink mentality, which is always nice in theory. But for people who aren't power users, this seems a bit overwhelming (my immediate, subconscious reaction erred this way everytime I looked at the images or watched the video).

And Microsoft can point to usage data all they want (which they do), but it shouldn't be used to dictate design. It should be used to support the gut instincts that make design human. And that's not to say there aren't some good ideas at play here. There are. They just need to be a bit more elegant.

I don't care for Office because of this 'Ribbon' and if there is no way incorporated to hide it...code will be created to lose it temporarily or permanently... ::)

I don't like the Explorer ribbon UI neither, but you can minimize it like i do in office 2010
Also i think they want the ribbon UI for touch screen users ie bigger icons

The ribbon does its job well in Office, exposing features that I now use that I simply hadn't seen before (I'm lazy like that to not look).  But explorer really isn't that complex, the only argument then is for consistency across the platform.

But really, if people don't like it, they will find a way to change it if they are tech-savy enough to do so.  Those who aren't tech savy will get used to it and find something else to dislike in Windows 9.  Back when tabbed browsing started coming more into the limelight I knew several people who would constantly complain about it, now they can't survive without it.
There's no place like 127.0.0.1

I was one of those people who 'HATED' tab browsing and would always turn it off.  Like you said today I absolutely have to have it.

Live and Learn I guess!
