If, you recently bought a Surface with Windows 8 Pro then, you will have noticed that the 64GB model of Surface Pro comes with 30GB of useable storage while 128GB one has 89GB of free storage. But, if, you are a heavy user who stores a lot of data on your devices then, that storage can run out very soon.
Although, Surface Pro also includes the support for microSD card upto 32GB and USB slot to expand the storage but, these external storage device costs a bit. But, don’t worry, you can still free up at-least 7GB of storage from your Surface Pro easily and free of cost.
How the space would be freed? Surface with Windows 8 Pro comes with the pre-copied recovery partitions which lets you re-intsall Windows 8 Pro on your Surface easily if, something wents wrong. That recover partition takes about 7GB of space on the Surface Pro which can also be freed.
What would be done with recover partition? Microsoft has included the recovery partitions in Surface Pro to help you re-install the Windows 8 Pro easily without the need for external source but, its not necessary to store recovery partition on your Surface. Instead, you can save the recovery parition on an external device like an USB or microSD card.
So, if you want to free at-least 7GB of space on your Surface Pro then, you may follow the instructions below.
Before proceeding to the instructions, you will need to fulfill the requirements:
• You must have at-least 8GB USB drive or 8GB free space on the microSD card to be able to copy the recovery partition.
Note: Make sure you USB doesn’t have anything important because, the recovery drive creation process will format the drive. Now, lets proceed to the instructions:
Instructions: • First of all, open up the ‘Search‘ Charm by swiping from right and selecting ‘Search‘.
• Your Search Charm will open. Here type ‘recovery‘ and select ‘Settings‘ filter from right. You would be showed ‘Create a recovery drive‘ in results. Press it.
• A pop-up window will open on your desktop entitled as ‘Create a recovery drive‘. Here check ‘
Copy the recovery partitions from the PC to the recovery drive ‘. Press ‘
Next ‘.
• Windows will search for the available drive to use as recovery drive. All your available storage devices would be showed there.
• Select the appropriate one which you want to be used as recovery drive and press ‘Next‘.
• You would be told that everything on the drive would be erased. So, press ‘Create‘ because we have already backed up everything.
• Once ‘Create‘ button has been pressed, Windows will start creating the recovery drive.
• It would take 10 – 20 minutes for creating the recovery drive on your USB.
• Once done, you would be told that the files have been copied successfully.
• You can verify it by opening the USB/microSD drive from Computer named as ‘Recovery‘ where all the files can be found.
• That’s all! You have successfully created the recovery drive for your Surface Pro and you would have freed at-least 7GB of space on C: drive of your tablet.
Note: Keep that USB/microSD card saved somewhere safe otherwise, you won’t be able to re-install Windows 8 Pro on Surface without that. VIDEO source:windows8core
