Short answer? A lot. Microsoft may not have been able to keep up its promise of releasing builds faster, but Windows 10 build 10074 that was officially released a few hours back, brings in many new features.
You can
grab the ISO files of this version here, by the way.
And although this particular version was spotted on the company’s servers a day before release, it comes with an important change in nomenclature — this is the first build that is labeled ‘Insider Preview’ and not the usual ‘Technical Preview’.
Gabriel Aul touched upon this saying, that this name change denotes the importance of the people that have signed up for the Windows Insider program to the development of Windows 10.
Anyway, he also revealed a rather long list of changes, and here are a few highlights of what’s new:
•
General UI improvements: Microsoft have given the user interface a new polish, and this version comes with new Live Tile animations and works better with high DPI displays.
•
Aero Glass: A fan-favorite feature from Windows 7 makes a comeback, and Redmond is now testing this in two variations. Half the users will see normal transparency, and the other half will see a blur effect on the Start Menu and the Taskbar.
•
Continuum enhancements: Closing an app in Tablet mode takes users back to the Start Screen instead of the desktop, as was previously the case. More polished snapping is also in.
•
Improved multitasking: A few enhancements to multitasking, including how Alt + Tab, Task View and Snap Assist function.
•
New default Windows sounds: Fresh new system sounds.
•
Cortana refreshed: The digital voice assistant gets updated and now offers an experience that is more ingrained into the operating system. Cortana can also reply to queries thanks to the Bing Instant Answers technology.
•
Music, Video Preview apps updated: Both applications get new features.
•
Xbox app also renovated: Features like Game DVR for PC, screenshots, user profiles and a Live Tile for the application are included.
•
Windows Store Beta: The unified store now has a blue tile instead of gray, and Xbox Live games and in-app purchases are now actively working.
Features and apps discovery: Microsoft has not built in small learning and discovery experiences in Windows 10, and these range from tips and tricks, to new applications that are available for download. This feature is optional.
