Windows 10’s New Wi-Fi Features and Issues
« on: July 01, 2015, 05:03:59 AM »
The previous build of Windows 10 (10158) added new branding for Microsoft’s Wi-Fi subscription service (previously, it was just called Network) to the OS.

Microsoft WiFi allows users to buy WiFi access and time from a global network of hotspots via their Microsoft account.

That could come in useful if you’re nowhere a free hotspot and can’t tether to your mobile, but in this day and age that seems like an increasingly unusual situation to be in.

Still, Microsoft WiFi is there if needed, and as an update to the discontinued Skype Wi-Fi finder, could be useful for those who relied on that service.

Sharing Too Much WiFi

A rather more alarming issue has been noted with WiFi Sense, Microsoft’s attempt to make sharing hotspots easier with friends and family.

Assuming they all have WiFi Sense running then their PCs and phones, they can be provided the WiFi password to your router, as long as they are a contact.

You can remove the feature by choosing not to share it with your Outlook contacts, Facebook friends or Skype contacts. However, for most people, even knowing about the existence of this feature may come as a surprise, yet alone an obscure setting buried in the menu.

Given that WiFi Sense doesn’t actually reveal the password, usually little harm can be done, but a random contact can easily leech your WiFi.

WiFi Sense was a feature in Windows Phone 8.1 that’s come to the desktop, hopefully Microsoft will spend some time highlighting the feature to surprised PC users, or disabling it by default.
