While no vendor would be vulgar enough to shout “fire sale”, it looks like the prices of older Windows hardware, specifically smaller tablets, are coming down fast.
In Europe, the Asus VivoTab 8 is down from a launch price of €199 to just €88 ($96). In the US, a similar model is down to $139 on Amazon.
These eight-inch tablets might only offer a modest 1280*800 display but still pack an Intel Bay Trail-T Z3745 Quad Core running at 1.33 GHz.
Meanwhile, the HP Steam 7 tablet is down to $83 on Amazon, with a smaller screen but the same resolution and a year’s subscription to Office 365. Dell Venue 8 Pro models now start from $129 and there are plenty of other offers around.
Tinkering users have upgraded these to Windows 10 using the preview versions. But, Microsoft’s rule against upgrading devices at eight-inches or smaller probably means they won’t support official updates.
Perhaps they will be able to be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile, depending on how Microsoft categorizes them.
Even so, these are fine devices for basic browsing, email and light office use, and at these prices will make a great second or third screen.
