A view of the open source world. LibreOffice is one of the most popular productivity solutions around, with more than 100 million active users at the latest count.

On the other hand, Thunderbird is one of the best email clients available that serves as a PIM (personal information manager) with feature like email, address book, calendar and tasks.

The perfect recipe to take the fight to Microsoft Office and Outlook?

Looks like that is exactly what could happen.

Thunderbird and LibreOffice might have a future together, and that is because the development of the email client has slowed down considerably — it has moved in a straight line these past few years, with barely any major new features added.

And discussions have now started to move Thunderbird out of Mozilla and over to The Document Foundation for active development in the future.

In the words of Executive Chairwoman for the Mozilla Foundation Mitchell Baker:

Quote
“I understand that Thunderbird’s future is currently under discussion and pretty much open. If it is decided to move Thunderbird out of Mozilla, I’d like to suggest to reach out to The Document Foundation and ask if they are interested. It seems to me that Thunderbird might be a good addition to their LibreOffice productivity suite.”
In fact, a comprehensive wiki has also been put together to share ideas about this potential new collaboration, though things still remain unofficial right now.

But considering the fact that The Document Foundation had already expressed plans to develop a PIM software before, it may actually not be necessary if Thunderbird arrives in the family. The direction things are heading, we could have some news on this very soon, it seems.

Microsoft will, obviously, be keeping a close eye on this, as this practically is one of the biggest competitors to the company’s productivity suite, Office.

Which, coincidentally, is the biggest cash cow for the Redmond based company.
