Intel Core M Powered Microsoft Surface Phone Due In September
« on: January 28, 2016, 08:35:23 PM »
Perhaps the best rumor to end 2015 is this one that claims to reveal the launch date of the mythic Microsoft Phone, along with some hardware specifications of the said device.

There has been enough talk about this phone, recently, along with several rumors about it.

So this is a thing now.

And the latest hearsay on this matter comes from a land called China, where someone claims to have inside information about this smartphone. He or she has been kind enough to post it on Weibo, their social website, suggesting that Microsoft is looking at a September 2016 launch.

The same source also claims that the Surface Phone will house an Intel Core M chipset.

Intel plans to build this sixth generation processor on a 14nm technology, the same one that Samsung is using for its Exynos 8890 chip.

That should hopefully ensure cooler operations, fast speeds and a battery life that lasts more than a few hours. One of the biggest reasons why Intel has not been able to carve out a big share in mobile is obviously the very short battery life of its x86 solutions

Then again, even ARM based chips struggle with battery when stressed.

Anyway, Microsoft is said to be pondering either a dual-core of quad-core configuration of this new Intel chip, which is reportedly more powerful than the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU that is set to power a number of smartphones next year.

Do keep in mind a couple of things, though.

First, this is an unconfirmed report from China, and is hard to vouch for when it comes to accuracy.

And secondly, Microsoft has a knack of cancelling hardware devices recently, and the company has backtracked on several Lumia models over the past couple of years.

The Surface Phone is not a done deal — but we do seem to be slowly moving towards launch.
