Fingerprint Support Coming To Windows 10 Mobile
« on: May 13, 2016, 04:59:54 PM »
About time, too! In fact, quite delayed. Should have been there with Windows 10 Mobile vanilla. But fingerprint support has been confirmed to be in development for the mobile OS.

And will arrive with Redstone, or Anniversary Update later this year.

Detailed have been provided at the recent WinHEC conference, a technical event that is focused on the latest improvements, enhancements and emerging technologies that Microsoft is working on for its platforms.

Like standardization of pen support in Windows 10 with the help of OEMs, as we learned today.

Anyway, back to the fingerprint technology that will be added to the mobile operating system this summer, it will utilize the same drivers and backend code that the Windows Hello features currently uses for PCs.

Expected, as that feature already supports fingerprint readers.

The above slides also reveal information on the methods in which fingerprint reading can be implemented. For starters, device manufacturers will be able to choose between built-in readers or external peripherals — likely use case scenario here is for Continuum.

And two gestures will be supported, that being touch and swipe.

Windows Insiders are already testing Redstone (codename for the Anniversary Update) builds right now, and chances are that this feature will roll out for them in the next few weeks on Windows 10 Mobile.

You can take a look at the slides here (PDF file).
