Apple is now offering free iPhone 4 cases to any iPhone 4 users who want them. Heres what you need to know:
1. Although we now know that 99.4% of iPhone 4 users never complained of any antenna-related issues in the first place, word of the free case giveaway will spread, and plenty of iPhone 4 users will happily take a free case now that its being offered to them even though it turns out the overwhelmingly vast majority of iPhone 4 users dont need it.
2. That having been said, the majority of iPhone 4 users will likely never even hear about the free case offer, let alone take advantage of it. Since virtually no iPhone 4 users are filing antenna related complaints with Apple to begin with, word of mouth is the only way theyll find out about it.
3.
Apples own Bumper case isnt that great to begin with, and while it works fine with the low-profile sync cable that comes with the iPhone 4, it doesnt work with some third party sync cables or even older sync cables from Apple. So you might want to lean toward one of the third party cases being offered.
4. Of the third-party iPhone 4 cases Apple is offering for free, Beatweeks highest rated is the Speck PixelSkin HD, which tested out at five stars out of five (our only five star case for iPhone 4 thus far). Other free options include iPhone 4 cases from Griffin, Belkin, and Incase.
5. For those curious, even though Apple has set aside $175 million to cover the cost of the case giveaway, thats actually very little money in the scheme of things; the company has several billion dollars of cash on hand. Its perhaps a little disturbing to try to imagine a corporation being so large that 175 million bucks amounts to little more than a rounding error on its balance sheet, but that goes to show just how large and how profitable Apple has become.
