A Pay-As-You-Go 4G Mobile Broadband Service [Clearwire Rover 4G Service Comes With Daily, Weekly or Monthly Plan Options]
Clearwire recently announced their iSpot Mobile Hotspot modem, which was targeted at those sporting an iDevice. Well, as of today Clearwire has rolled out yet another 4G service offering and thankfully this one is aimed at more than Apple users. The new service is called Rover and comes described as “the nation’s first pay-as-you-go 4G mobile broadband service for tech-savvy Gen Y customers.”
But fancy sounding description aside, a pay as you go 4G service offering is fairly nice. That is, assuming you live in a 4G blanketed area. But that aside, Rover comes with options for customers to sign up for daily, weekly or monthly plans which are priced at $5, $20 or $50 per month respectively.
According to the official numbers, the Rover service (along with the Rover Puck or Rover Stick modems) can see download speeds of anywhere from 3 to 6 mbps second with bursts up to 10 mbps.
And yes, the Rover Puck and the Stick. Those are the catchy names for the modems. The Puck is priced at $149.99 and is capable of broadcasting a mobile hotspot and accepting up to eight connected devices at a time. The Stick on the other hand, is a USB device that comes with a $99.99 price tag. As for compatibility with the Rover Stick — Mac OS X or Windows XP, Vista and 7 will all work.
One of the nice perks about the Rover service is that the modems come with both a 14 day “no hassle return policy” as well as two free days of service. In other words, you can buy the modem and test the service for a few days before having to actually make a commitment. Sounds like a nice way to make sure you have ample 4G coverage, after all, sometimes those coverage maps are a little misleading.
Bottom line, 4G is nice, and 4G without a long term contract just makes it sound a little nicer.
