Android Most Popular Mobile OS with New Buyers
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:38:35 AM »

Remember when Android first launched and there was debate as to whether or not it would be an 'iPhone-killer'? Well, the iPhone may still be alive and well but Android is definitely doing some damage.

It was a huge summer for smartphones. With the launch of iPhone 4 on AT&T and Verizon's DROID invasion, there is certainly no shortage of high-end smartphones for shoppers to consider. So what have people been buying? BlackBerrys are still the most popular smartphones overall. However, statistical data from Nielsen reports that the belle of the ball when it comes to recent purchases is Android. Data from the last half year shows that 32 percent of smartphone shoppers opted for devices running the Google OS. BlackBerry OS and iOS are all but tied for second place with 25 and 26 percent each.

When it comes to overall market share, BlackBerry is still king, with a share of 31 percent. Gaining on the businessman's best friend is the iPhone, with 28 percent and bringing up the rear is Google's Android OS, accounting for 19 percent of the market. That said, Nielsen's data shows Android is the only OS to show real growth from the start of the period to the end. The OS accounted for just 8 percent of the market in January, and rose a full 11 percentage points to hit 19 percent in August. BlackBerry actually dropped from 36 to 31 percent, and iOS also experienced a decline, dropping from 29 percent to 28 percent.
