Palm Pre gets a Virtual Keyboard, but not from Palm
« on: August 17, 2009, 05:15:04 PM »

Since the Palm Pre was announced, many people wonder if it had a virtual keyboard.

Many others thought it didn’t need one since the Pre has a small screen. By the time it was out, most of us knew it didn’t have an on screen keyboard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get one.

If you are one of those Pre owners that hate sliding the keyboard out every time you need to write a text message or email, etc. Well, thanks to the good people over at WebOS Internals, we know that a native on-screen keyboard is a real possibility.

By modifying the files that control the SYM pop-up extra characters list, a real on-screen keyboard can be crafted. You can use the keyboard in both; portrait and landscape orientations, and is available as a patch for installation.

Okay, so that’s the good news, now the “other” news. This development is in it’s early stage and probably riddled with bugs and errors. In fact, they’re saying that the patch is “pre-alpha” and nowhere near ready for public consumption.

So before you go linux crazy, be aware; try this patch at your own risk.
