Windows XP support from Microsoft ends on April 14th of 2014. What does this mean? Here’s the short story:
• Windows XP computers will continue to function after 4/14/2014
• Microsoft will no longer produce updates for the operating system, leaving it vulnerable to security problems
• Soon after the 14th, many vendors will end support for their applications if they are installed on Windows XP. This cound include software like Adobe Reader, Java and Anti-Virus programs.
• A Windows XP computer can be upgraded to Windows 7 or 8 (Microsoft’s currently supported systems), especially if the machine is newer or has “better than average” hardware. The labor and complexity to complete an upgrade may outweigh the benefits. Buying a new PC with Windows 7 or 8 may be your best bet.
Aside from those points, you may want to check with your software vendors and regulating or auditing agencies to be sure you are in compliance if running Windows XP after the 14th of April.
The simplest recommendation we have for any business is to plan for the replacement of your XP computers before April 2014, or shortly after.
On a side note, Windows Vista support ends April 11th, 2017.
