Microsoft has just announced a $1 million hardware partnership with the U.S. Department of State.

This for its upcoming United States Diplomacy Center, an interactive museum and educational center devoted to highlighting American diplomacy and foreign relations both at home and abroad.

Microsoft’s contribution will consist of technology designed and implemented in collaboration with the U.S. Diplomacy Center, which will eventually be constructed at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

US Diplomacy Center

Microsoft will contribute a mix of software and hardware to the center to create an informational centerpiece.

There have been discussions about a “Diplomacy is Everywhere 24/7″ exhibit.

This would be a large, interactive touch-screen wall which will allow museum visitors to be engaged in real life diplomacy scenarios, from peace talks to civil unrest and even public health crises, using Bing Maps.

US Diplomacy Center Hardware and Software

Microsoft’s partnership with the museum, including their hardware and software contributions, will also include strategically placed Surface Hub touch screens.

The plan is to have these allow visitors to utilize diplomacy in solving diplomatic scenarios that affect America and the rest of the world.

Visitors will also be able to speak in near real time with other visitors in their native languages by using Skype Translator, which translates speech from a variety of different languages.

The partnership seems very well received from the State Department as evidenced by this tweet from US Secretary of State John Kerry.

A great coup by Microsoft as they are starting to get Windows 10 related technologies integrated into the mainstream.

Can’t wait to see the Surface Hub at work.

You can visit the U.S. Diplomacy Center website at diplomacy.state.gov and the Diplomacy Center Foundation (DCF) web site at DiplomacyCenterFoundation.org. You can also see more information in the linked presentation and FAQs.
