More new tweaks and changes in Windows 10.
The latest build is 10036 and it’s starting to show little tweaks and changes that will appear in the final RTM version.
The latest set are in Windows Defender, the native security tool that comes with Windows 10.
There are some new and interesting options being explored here by Microsoft.
The first setting is for
Real-time Protection which basically speaks for itself. Turn off and on to keep your device protected.
The second setting which is new is for
Cloud Protection.
That’s interesting because with this setting enabled, Microsoft can get information from your PC that’s problematic, perform algorithmic analysis and make remediation recommendations based on common patterns between customers.
This has the potential to make the tool exponentially more effective (at least if it works as advertised).
Windows DefenderThe third setting is entitled “
sample submission“. Checking this means that you agree to automatically send sample files for Microsoft to examine for malicious software.
Then there is an “
Exclusions” section.
Windows Defender ExclusionsIn this section, you can add:
• Files and Locations.
• File Types.
• Processes.
Pretty standard for an anti-virus/anti malware product.
Windows Defender Exclusion TypesNow it’s easy to glaze over this stuff and say it looks cool but the devil as they say will be in the details.
In the era of privacy and hacking, it’s not clear how “cloud protection” would work.
In the coming days, we will be looking for more transparency about exactly what files Microsoft will be able to transfer based on the user agreement.
How exactly this will work will be the difference between a good and terrible idea.
Once again, this is early in the cycle and this is beta software so we’ll have to keep an eye on this.
