Microsoft Confirms Extensions Support For Spartan Browser
« on: March 26, 2015, 01:48:34 PM »
The Spartan browser is all set to take center stage on Windows 10, what with Microsoft confirming that this will be the main web browser in the new operating system.

Internet Explorer 11, however, will continue to be offered as a legacy solution.

But it is not inline to receive any major updates, from what is currently offered in Windows 8.1.

Redmond provided some updates on how they plan on offering a modern browsing experience in Windows 10 via Project Spartan and discussed the future in a recent blog post. More of an update, really, on how the company wants to take browsing to a whole new level.

With features that make it easier to consumer and share content.

As explained:

Quote
“Project Spartan is our future: it is the default browser for all Windows 10 customers and will provide unique user experiences including the ability to annotate on web pages, a distraction-free reading experience, and integration of Cortana for finding and doing things online faster.”
What about support for extensions, then?

Add-ons and plugins are an essential part of a modern web browsing experience — at least on desktop computers, if not mobile devices. Luckily, the IE development team confirmed that extension support for Spartan is set in stone. Though it might be a while before we see it in action.

This uplifting little tweet sets the matter straight:

Windows 10 RTM, it looks like, but you never know with Microsoft. The company might enable it in any of the future preview builds.

But first, we need to get our hands on Spartan proper, and then talk about extensions.

A test version of the new browser is widely expected to debut in the next Technical Preview build of Windows 10, which itself might be released to Windows Insiders sometimes next month.
