Spartan Speed Improvements Show It Means Business
« on: April 24, 2015, 05:50:36 AM »
Project Spartan, the new web browser set to debut with Windows 10 has got a lot of things going for it, but through it all Microsoft remains focused on one of the more important aspects of its browser.

Speed.

The latest version of Spartan that arrived with build 10061 that was made available overnight comes with an array of small bug fixes and large speed improvements — the Edge rendering engine that powers the new browser is now a fair bit faster.

At least in benchmarks.

In fact, it handily beats Google Chrome in some tests, and this is notable as Google’s browser is considered a torch bearer when it comes to page rendering and speeds.

The popular Octane 2.0 test shows that the current version of Spartan is good enough for a total score in the range of 32,000 points. The 64-bit version of Chrome 42, for instance, claims 30,000, while the latest Firefox Nightly build only manages 27,000.

That is some serious improvements from the 17,000 that Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1 manages, and Microsoft has almost doubled it in this benchmark.

Redmond’s new browser also scored more than 400 points out of a total 555 in the HTML5 test. Its predecessor, Internet Explorer 11 maxed out at 336 on Windows 8.1.

And while synthetic benchmarks rarely tell the full story, and don’t mean much in everyday use, it still is encouraging to see Microsoft improving Spartan in areas where it needed work.

A lot of work still remains, from OpenGL support to extensions, but so far so good.
