Forced Windows 10 Upgrade Was A Mistake, Microsoft Clarifies
« on: October 16, 2015, 05:29:05 PM »
It was all a mistake! An error. An honest lapse. A dreadful miscalculation. As we reported yesterday, Microsoft accidentally forced the upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 users.

Providing them, as you can see, with no option than to restart their computer and begin the install.

At first, it was not clear, among all the confusion what exactly happened, as the upgrade to Windows 10 has bene optional all along. But Redmond confirmed in a statement that it was all a mistake, and the option to upgrade was checked by default.

Meaning, it was automatically downloaded and installed on PCs running Windows 7:

Quote
“As part of our effort to bring Windows 10 to existing genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 customers, the Windows 10 upgrade may appear as an optional update in the Windows Update (WU) control panel. This is an intuitive and trusted place people go to find Recommended and Optional updates to Windows. In the recent Windows update, this option was checked as default; this was a mistake and we are removing the check.”
As the statement above clarifies, the company has since removed this configuration, and now users are allowed to choose if they want to install the new operating system or not.

Meaning, if you want to delay the upgrade to Windows 10, you can do so without any issues now.

At the end of the day, it is not an excuse from Microsoft. Even if this was a mistake, it mainly targeted Windows 7 computers, which usually are production machines used by power users and professionals, not to mention businesses.

Hopefully, there are stronger security and control checks to prevent issues like this happening again.
