Microsoft Wants To Make Windows 10 Lock Screen More Personal
« on: October 10, 2016, 10:37:26 PM »
And it has already patented a new technology to help with this. The Windows 10 lock screen is an area that has received continual improvements ever since the launch of the new operating system.

From bringing Cortana there to the addition of a camera button on Windows 10 Mobile.

This time around, though, the software titan is preparing for something that makes this facet of the OS a more personal space — one that handles sensitive information that you may not want others to see. It is, after all, the part of the OS that everyone can see without even logging in with their credentials.

So as this patent reveals, Redmond wants to use biometrics that would allow Windows 10 the ability to provide users with access to personal information on the lock screen.

This new security would let them quickly authenticate and get access to a personalized lock screen that would only include information they want to show:

The patent explains:

Quote
“If it is determined that the measure of confidence satisfies one or more criteria, then personal information associated with the user is selectively rendered to the lock screen while the computing device is in the locked state.

If it determined that the measure of confidence does not satisfy the one or more criterion, then such personal information may be suppressed from the lock screen. The foregoing technique may also be applied to selectively provide or deny access to certain functionality of the computing device via the lock screen.”

Good.

Early stages right now, but if this technology ever make it to our computers then the lock screen would definitely become a more helpful replacement to the desktop.

Users will be able to see sticky notes or messages, for example, without having to provide their usernames and passwords. It could take a while to arrive, though, this feature, but it does show that Microsoft is working to maximize the full potential of all areas of the new operating system.
