Pinning program icons to the Start Menu - Win 7

I cleared all program icons from the Start Menu so I could customize what's on it. When I open some programs they appear on the Start Menu so I can pin them there but other programs do not show up when opened. I have the "Store and display recently opened programs in the Start Menu" enabled in the properties box. Is there another way to pin programs to the start menu or at least get them to appear so I can pin them that way?
