Hide Desktop Icons

What's the best way to clean a cluttered desktop? Use the Windows Desktop Cleaner? Nope! Delete each file, folder and shortcut? Nope! Actually, it's as simple as hiding all the icons. Why bother with the boring task of cleaning the clutter when you can just hide it; we show you how.

The normal, longer, finger-straining way is to right-click the desktop, go to View and click on 'Show desktop icons' in Vista or Windows 7. But the cooler, efficien t way is to use 'Hide Desktop Icons' by the same creators of Desktop Sidebar.

HideDesktopIcons does what it says; it simply hides all your icons on the desktop in a single mouse click instead of three. For those who love beautiful wallpapers shining through or simply like their desktop clean or at least have the appearance of a clean desktop, HideDesktopIcons is the perfect solution.

Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnail Customizer

If bigger is always better, then definitely my Windows 7 window preview thumbnails are bigger than your Windows 7 window preview thumbnails.

Apparently I'm not the only chauvinist geek out here, as Kishan Bagaria proves it by parading around his big thumbs. Well after all he's the maker of this geek-steroid app.

What "Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnail Customizer" does is it allows one to customize Windows 7 taskbar thumbnail previews in detail. You can not only change the window size for squinty geeks but also change the text (perfect for geeks with one foot thick glasses). For the overly fussy tinkering kinds, you can fiddle with the spacing of top, bottom, left, right margins and mouse delay time too!

Screensaver Player

No, this isn't another player to view your "not so legal" movie download collection, but rather a player to view only screensavers.

For all those who've wondered why one couldn't view screensavers as media files, this is your answer. This little app allows one to manage screensavers with playlists, shuffle and time intervals.

The app is simply brilliant. Install the player, download any screensaver you like, double-click it to open and pop comes the screensaver in action. No need of installing it in Windows system folder and then selecting it from the drop down list snore

The app is an absolute must for the tinkerer at heart and it is here.

ProcessQuickLink 2

Ever wanted to know what secret program ran behind in Windows using Windows Task Manager? The guys over at Process Library thought the same and therefore have come up with a unique solution that allows you to find out the same info without the need for a different application.

What ProcessQuickLink 2 does is, it installs a link - a green icon with a white exclamation mark - next to all the processes in Windows Task Manager itself.  So next time when you cannot figure out what process runs secretly in the background, just click on the exclamation icon next to it and poof the application is destroyed forever! No, seriously, you are taken directly to the processlibrary.com website that tells you all about the application; whether it is legitimate, safe, who are the developers, etc.

A fantastic little add-on implemented in a fantastically intuitive way. As Austin Powers would say "Groovy baby!"

Evernote

If your office looks permanently like the image above, you definitely need a smarter way of note taking. No we are not suggesting a hot blonde secretary tailing you everywhere - though that could work wonders for things other than work - we are talking of Evernote.

Evernote does what no physical note taking pad can do; be everywhere, whenever you need it, whether it be on the desktop, laptop, mobile phone or the internet. Your stickynotes are always in perfect sync.

Not only that, if you have a camera phone, you can automatically upload snapshots of presentations that you want to remember, whiteboards at meetings, people that you forget, products at the store, etc. and tag them all for easy retrieval.

The killer feature is OCR - Optical Character Recognition - which can help you locate that note by searching for text in images.

The application is free for 40MB worth of monthly upload allowance. However, the free accounts mysteriously have shoddy OCR performance. Premium accounts on the other hand receive 500MB monthly upload allowances, SSL security, priority image recognition, and official support for $45 (approx. Rs. 2,000) a year.
