How to configure a Windows 7 HomeGroup
« on: September 02, 2010, 06:55:12 PM »
A homegroup in Windows 7 makes it easier to share files and printers on a home network. You can share pictures, music, videos, documents, and printers with other people in your homegroup. As a security measure, other people can’t change the files that you share, unless you give them permission to do so.

When you set up a computer with Windows 7, a homegroup is created automatically if one doesn’t already exist on your home network. I assume that you already have an existing homegroup in one of your Windows 7 computers.  If a homegroup already exists, you can join it.  To connect a second computer to the homegroup go to the first computer’s control panel, then click HomeGroup:

After you create or join a homegroup, you can select the files and folders that you want to share. You can prevent specific files or folders from being shared, and you can share additional libraries later. You can help protect your homegroup with a password, which you can change at any time.

Click the “view or print the homegroup password” to view the password:

The password will appear.  You may opt to print it and distribute to other people connected to your homegroup.

One your other Windows 7 computers, go to the Control Panel > HomeGroup then click Join Now:

The concept of homegroup simplifies the file sharing on small scale home networks. In older versions of Windows like 2000 and XP, users had to supply a login and password for another machine or map a network drive to access shared content or devices.

I tracked down this video and hope it helps

Thanks  :)
I shall work through this in the morning when I am fresh.

I think one issue I have is that one of the PCs is still XP Pro SP3 while the others are all various varieties of Win 7. Perhaps there is some legacy of XP Workgroups (not Home groups) still hanging around the system.

No I cannot convert the XP machine to Win 7 coz it has very low RAM - and no physical space to add any more in the SFF. Plus the fact I can still run old favourite apps in it.

How small amount of Memory?. I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium on as little as 512 MB memory..Win7 will install on as small space as 16GB..in clean install .. on an old DELL XP3000.
Even tho Dell said NO and M$ said NO.... Then I used a 3rd party driver finder to update the Drivers.... you also might try open the exe on your XP apps and click run in compatibility mode.
The only STUPID Question is the one you never asked.

I am glad you added and it ran OK, coz doing a clean install is one thing but having a machine that is fast enough to use is another.

Snuffy, mine has 1gig of Ram.
Do you really really find that Win 7 will run effectively on 512 MB.
You are a rotten lot tempting me like this  ;D

Well, the guy whom I did this for was very happy.... he said better than the old system he had .... XP.
I also have Win7 HomePremium and Office 2010 Pro Plus on a 1GB Acer laptop.  works ok for me.
512 is min - I would recommend and be close to HAPPY. again that depends where you are.... local ISP is really good at 56K (some farmers still use), most folks in town are happy with 750 KBps and others bitch at 6 MBps, so Windows 7 works pretty good on 512 MB.

I currently have W7-Ultimate on an AMD 1.73Ghz with 512 DDR266 and 80GB HDD w/Geforce FX5500 256MB GPU and it is very stable and it has been running about 8 months.
