Ubuntu goes to daily updates
« on: December 01, 2010, 04:40:00 PM »
It’s been a standard pattern for as long as I can remember: every 6 months, Ubuntu would release a major update with everything patched. It’s clockwork. But in a conference call last month, founder Mark Shuttleworth mentioned a more rapid update system to compete with the big two OSs – Windows and OSX. “Today we have a six-month release cycle,” Shuttleworth said. “In an internet-oriented world, we need to be able to release something every day.

This means not only Ubuntu, but all other software packages that share this 6-month timeline will need to prepare for rapid, unscheduled releases of updates. This system is pretty much the norm today, so Ubuntu is simply following in the line of successful update deployment.
