I want to let everybody know, that on W7NI, we all work together in bringing you our members and guests the How To's on the various Builds of Windows 7.  Forum member littlemax9 in New Zealand made this original post, and I javajolt in the Silicon Valley Calif. USA wanted to post the complete word doc to a topic on the forum.  littlemax9 was gracious enough to give his permission on the repost.  The screenshots you see were some how locked in and they could not be saved to disk, or to copy the html address from them.  I therefore enlisted the help of our system administrator riso who helped on his day off, and while I slept (3 continents, 3 different time zones, each a world apart) allowing me to aquire the screenshots.  This is what W7Ni is all about members helping other members, and now I proudly present you with the fruits of this combined effort.

How to activate online:

Step-1: Install build 7264 as normal. When prompted for a key, enter nothing and continue. complete the installation.

Step-2: Open properties of computer (right click on computer icon and select for properties)

Step-3: Here it will show "30 days to activate. Activate windows now". click on this and the activation window will pop up. Keep it openned, do not close it.

Step-4: Now go to "services.msc" and Stop the Software Protection Service (Run > services.msc > select Software Protection Service > Click Stop the Service on the Right)

Step-5: Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spp\tokens\pkeyconfig\pkeyconfig.xrm-ms

and Take ownership of pkeyconfig.xrm-ms (may just appear as pkeyconfig) and give yourself full permissions to it. (Right click on it > Properties > Security Tab
> Advanced > Owner Tab > Edit > Click on Administrators > OK > OK > OK > OK > YES

then Right Click on the file again, Properties > Security Tab, click on EDIT > click on Administrators, Full Control: Allow > OK > OK)

Step-6: Delete pkeyconfig. Replace with the pkeyconfig from the folder" Win7_Build7264_Activate.rar" you downloaded

Step-7: Navigate to C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\tokens.d

and Delete tokens.dat. Replace with the tokens.dat from the folder" Win7_Build7264_Activate.rar" you downloaded.(please note, this is hidden file so keep setting to view the hidden files and folders)

Step-8: Now start back up the Software Protection Service from the services.msc window.

Step-9: Now copy and beta/rc key and insert in the activation window you kept on openned.(reffer step-3) and click on next to activate your win7 build 7264 online.
Now your windows 7 build 7264 is activated successfully. Enjoy!

Please note that if you skipped the step-3 or due to some mistake your "activation window" is not possible to open then follow the below steps:

step-A: open command prompt(cmd) with administrative privilege (go to start>all programs>accessories and here right click the 'command prompt" and select for 'run as administrator'.

Step-B: type here this command: slmgr.vbs -ipk MVBCQ-B3VPW-CT369-VM9TB-YFGBP to install the product key. after getting message of " product key installed successfully" follow the next step

step-C: now type this command: slmgr.vbs -ato to activate your windows online. Enjoy! Your copy of Windows is now activated.

What is the point???
Why, go to "another" build? If the one your using is working and "accepted" by Microsoft. Especially when doing "updates"?
                         I just don't get this?

Now, IF---this gets one to the "point" of NOT having to worry about being "shut down" next March 2010;then, I can understand. THIS would make perfect "sense" to me then.

Hi Joe,

Subsequent builds are released because more time than not there have been bugs fixed, or some additions have been made to the previous build.  In Windows the furture builds  are released in service packs, therefore there is no additional charges.

When many software manufactuers release a piece of software as long as the updates or new builds are begin with the same first number (ie. build7xxx) there is generally no up charge, but once the build changes to (ie. build8xxx) that constitutes a new release and usually requires a small expenditure to aquire that newer version.

Hey I'm I missing something? The subject title is: Re: How to Activate Online: There are no directions for Updating! I updated from Build 7260 (WINDOWS_7_BUILD_7260_WIN7_RTM_X86_DVD_MULTI_LANGUAGE_Ultimate(by.4969576.TPB_[mininova]) using the 7264.iso in a windows enviroment without a problem, then I activated with Javajolt's instructions.

I activated 7264 according to instructions and everything worked fine, however, after using 7264 for a number of days (a week or better) low and behold "This copy of Windows is not genuine" appears.

Then a window pops up requiring a reinstallation of Windows

Any thoughts or remedies?
