New handset accompanies news of Blur-ray player, notebook drive

Toshiba has released information on several upcoming products including a new handset and a pair of Blu-ray devices.

The company said that the new TG01 smartphone would use the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and will sport a 4.1-inch touchscreen interface and a 3.2 megapixel camera

Additionally, the company said that owners of older TG01 handsets would be offered a free update to Windows Mobile 6.5.

"Our new TG01 Windows phone is quite simply the next step in cutting edge mobile technology," said Toshiba information systems UK deputy managing director Hidehito Koka.

"We’ve been thrilled with the market’s response to the TG01 handset so far and worked closely with Microsoft to launch one of the first Windows phones to the market."

Additionally, Toshiba is said to be preparing for its first foray into Blu-ray. The company is reportedly targeting November for the release of its BDX2000 Blu-ray player. Toshiba also said that it would be offering a notebook model with with an internal BD-RW drive.

The release of the products could mark a bittersweet moment for Toshiba, which waged a long and costly war against Blu-ray with its rival HD-DVD standard.
