Windows 10 Tutorials 4 – Cortana in Windows 10

Welcome to our Windows 10 tutorial series.

We will be spending time walking you through the ins and outs of Windows 10.

Today we will be focusing on Cortana, Microsoft’s new virtual assistant.

Microsoft is doing something pretty unprecedented and that is adding an intelligent assistant to the Windows 10 Desktop.

The Cortana box is located in the Windows 10 Taskbar on the left, right after the Windows Icon.

There are 2 ways to interact with Cortana.

• You can use the keyboard/finger/mouse.

• You can use your voice.

If you want to use your voice to use Cortana, you can enable the “Hey Cortana” voice feature.

You can also click on the Microphone icon in the Cortana box and Cortana will open up like this:

As you can see, it’s “listening” to hear your voice prompt.

The other way to use Cortana is with the keyboard and mouse. To do this, simply click on the Cortana box in the Windows 10 Taskbar.

When you click there, the Cortana prompt window comes up with two major sections.

• Web History – A list with a few of your recent searches.

• News – some of the day’s top headlines from Bing.

If none of those appeal to you right there and then, you can type in a fresh query.

In this example, I search for our sister site “eye on windows”.

Editors note – We would have loved to search on Bing for “Windows 10 Update” but apparently the Bing algorithm doesn’t feel this site is providing enough valuable Windows 10 content to rank highly in their index. Go figure.

Then a window opens up in your default browser (In my case Chrome) and then it searches for your query item using Bing.

As you can see, it was able to successfully use the text I typed in for a Bing search engine query.
