The Top 4 Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts
« on: June 11, 2015, 06:29:52 AM »
Do you love shortcuts? If you don’t, you sure should! They save time, energy, and…time…they’re pretty much the best things ever!

Since Windows 10 has renewed a laser-like focus to the desktop experience, it is also important to note that shortcut options have been expanded as well.

Many of these shortcuts are directly related to multi-tasking (hallelujah) and many directly address new functionalities and features available with Windows 10.

Below are what I think are the top 4 Windows 10 keyboard shortcut(s) – check them out:

1. Task View

With this, you can access apps that are running as well as the virtual desktop. (hint: task view will remain open when both keys are released.)

• Activate with WINKEY + TAB key

2. The Virtual Desktop

There are different shortcuts to manage virtual desktops quickly….the options below are some of my favorites.

• Creating a new virtual desktop and switching to it use WINKEY + CTRL D

• To close down the virtual desktop use WINKEY + CTRL F4

• On the right or left switching to the virtual desktop use WINKEY + CTRL Left/Right

3. Selecting Text

In the Command Prompt, many of the standard shortcuts for editing text now work (finally!) – here are some of your best options:

SHIFT + Arrow Left/Right/Up/Down will move the cursor one character at a time and select it on the way based on the direction. To select more text continue pressing the arrow keys.

CTRL + SHIFT and Left/Right will move the cursor a word to the direction you are using or it will select the entire word on the way.

SHIFT + Page Up/Down will move the cursor up or down a screen and selects text

CTRL M enters “mark mode”, which is helpful for selecting text. Before the only way to accomplish this was right-clicking within the Command Prompt and the making a selection of Mark. Now this mode is no longer as important due to the shift key short cuts.

4. Search And Find

Make your life easier with literally 2 clicks (that’s 2 clicks, people – you can do this!).

CTRL F will open up a find dialog to search the output of Command Prompt.

Even though these shortcuts are awesome, there are still many that would be great to have. For example, I think that Howtogeek.com had a killer idea when they said,

“Sadly, there’s not yet a key combination that will move the current window between virtual desktops. How about Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + Left / Right — please, Microsoft?”
Preach it, fellow geeks, preach it!

The truth is, there will always be room for growth in terms of shortcuts and keyboard efficiency tactics. While we wait for even more to come our way, we will have to be content with the plethora or options we currently have.
