Microsoft Using Your Bandwidth To Deliver Windows Updates
« on: July 31, 2015, 08:06:04 PM »
Want to opt out? Then read on! Microsoft released Windows 10 worldwide this Wednesday to an overwhelming response, and an overpowering amount of data consumption.

And in order to alleviate some of the load on its servers, as well as allow users to upgrade faster, the software titan has introduced what it calls Windows Update Delivery Optimization — which is, in simpler terms, a distributed system to deliver these updates.

As Redmond explains, this new delivery optimization system can send apps and updates from one PC to another on your local network, as well as to any other PC on the Internet.

A bit like torrents.

The fact that this option was enabled by default, without any notice provided to users, caused a bit of an issue, with several outlets calling Microsoft out for what is misallocation of their network bandwidth without permission.

Which it is, no two words about it.

And while this is a very useful feature overall, which makes the upgrade process smoother and faster, it’s easy to see why this could be a problem for those with data caps, or limited bandwidths. Or even users working on critical projects that require maximum upload speeds.

Microsoft, for their part, have clarified that this feature only uses a limited portion of idle upload bandwidth, this perhaps will not satisfy users with the constraints listed above.

So how to disable this option?

Simply head on over to the Updates and Security tab in Settings and under the Advanced Option you will be able to choose how updates are delivered. Change it as you see fit.
