Microsoft Will Update Windows 10 Mobile Without Carriers
« on: December 10, 2015, 08:28:15 PM »
Indeed. Smartphones may have become the most used devices for some, but mobile platforms are yet to figure out updates. Windows 10 Mobile aims to do just that.

While Apple has had the power to bypass carriers and wireless networks for ages when it comes to new versions of iOS or its updates, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and more did not enjoy this privilege.

For example, whenever Microsoft wanted to push a new build of Windows Phone 8.1 or lower, they had to submit the files to mobile carriers for testing.

These companies confirmed that these new versions worked perfectly on their networks, and did not suffer from issues like battery drain or connection drops on their networks.

This is a process that took weeks or months, and there have been cases in the past when new versions were never rolled out as they were not approved.

However, Microsoft is ready to stir things up a little here.

In order to solve this problem, the company has decided to remove the radio stack from the core of its new operating system — this being the part of the software that communicates with mobile networks, meaning carriers will now only have to test builds if the radio stack changes.

They will still have the final say on when to rollout an update.

But basically, this is just another confirmation of what we heard before.

So if you’re running a Windows Phone 8.1 or earlier smartphone, the only wait on your hands is of the final rollout of Windows 10 Mobile (this year, or early next). After that, it should be smooth sailing.

At least, that’s the plan.

And at least, it will save us from the instances where some people received the Lumia Denim update some six months later than others.
