CES 2016: Android Based Remix OS Officially Announced For PCs
« on: January 07, 2016, 11:15:33 PM »
The excellent Remix OS is coming to a PC near you? Or is it? In hindsight, this is probably what Chrome OS should have been, but Google took another route.

Jide, however, the company behind Remix OS is doing things their own way.

They have just announced that they will be releasing an x86 version of their operating system as a free global download soon — aiming for users in the emerging markets. This is obviously not the first OS based on Android that targets desktop devices.

But it very closely resembles what a user might imagine Android to be on a desktop.

The official website states:

Quote
“By revitalizing your seasoned hardware with Remix OS for PC, breathe new life into it with over 1.6 million Android apps. Whether it’s for work at school or in the office, watching a TV show or playing your favorite games, Android’s rich app ecosystem always has something for exactly what you need and want to do.”
Remix OS basically frees users from owning their own devices, as it can be stored on a USB stick with a minimum capacity of 8GB, and then plugged into any old hardware.

Old here meaning PCs from a few years old, as it can pretty much run on anything.

Even Macs.

It is based on Android Lollipop, and is set to launch on January 12. Whether it is able to take a substantial market share from Windows, even if on the low end, remains to be seen, but Microsoft has another small competitor on the PC front.
