Windows 10 Now Automatically Frees Up Disk Space
« on: January 20, 2017, 02:30:57 PM »
Not that you’d want to do this if you are a power user, but Microsoft has baked in new abilities in Windows 10 that allow the OS to automatically free up space for you.

This feature has been introduced in the recently released Windows 10 build 15014, and helps users in removing unnecessary files automatically whenever you run low on disk space. You can take a look at it by going to Settings > System > Storage Settings.

And although this feature is still in its early days, it has shades of the Disk Cleanup option that has been around for a while in Windows.

But as Microsoft notes, this new feature in the Creators Update is there to make the whole cleanup process seamless for users that want to get rid of unnecessary files on their drives regularly.

As Dona Sarkar, the head of the Windows Insider program says:

Quote
“To save you an extra step when low on disk space, we’ve added a new option in Storage Settings to automatically get rid of the files you don’t need. Currently we support this for unused temporary files and items that have been in your recycle bin for 30 days.”

Worth a mention here that this feature comes off by default, and users will have to enable it from the Settings app in order to have unneeded files automatically removed by Windows 10.

And as for the feature itself, only a couple of options are available right now, but this will undoubtedly change by the time Creators Update sees final release in April.
