Windows 7 To Support Logon Background Customization
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:45:55 PM »
It was orginially reported that customizing the Log On Screen had been removed from Windows 7.  This registry tweak has been discovered and posted yesterday 3.16.09, so for those of you who customize everything have at it...javajolt

Rafael Rivera made an interesting discovery in Windows 7 build 7057. This version of the upcoming Microsoft operating system provides the option to customize the logon background without the previously needed third party applications or system hacks. That’s a huge step in the right direction for Microsoft as many users of their previous operating systems relied on hacks to customize them.

Users still have to enable the feature manually and perform some other operations but it is easier and more secure than patching system files like in previous operating systems. The first step is to turn on the feature in the Windows Registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background

Check for the key OEMBackground and change its value to 1 to enable the logon background customization feature. O is the default value which means the feature is disabled. As you can see it has mainly been designed with OEM versions of Windows 7 in mind. The value might not exist in retail versions of Windows 7 but it should be able to create it easily.

%windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds

This is the location of the background images that get loaded during logon if the logon background customization feature in Windows 7 is enabled. The images need to have a size of less than 256 Kilobytes and should be available in jpg format. Replace or add images with the following names to that folder:

* backgroundDefault.jpg
* background768x1280.jpg (0.6)
* background900x1440.jpg (0.625)
* background960x1280.jpg (0.75)
* background1024x1280.jpg (0.8)
* background1280x1024.jpg (1.25)
* background1024x768.jpg (1.33-)
* background1280x960.jpg (1.33-)
* background1600x1200.jpg (1.33-)
* background1440x900.jpg (1.6)
* background1920x1200.jpg (1.6)
* background1280x768.jpg (1.66-)
* background1360x768.jpg (1.770833-)

The backgroundDefault.jpg image will be loaded if a resolution specific background image cannot be found. Depending on the monitor’s resolution it might be stretched to fit the desktop. If the background images cannot be loaded a default image will be displayed instead.
