Window Hopper Brings a macOS-Style Shortcut to Windows
« on: September 03, 2026, 03:17:12 PM »
Microsoft’s free PowerToys package has a new utility called Window Hopper, which brings a popular macOS-style keyboard shortcut to Windows. Window Hopper lets you switch between windows within your current app with the Alt+` keyboard shortcut. (That’s a grave accent symbol, which is located above the Tab key on your keyboard.)

In other words, if you have five Chrome browser windows open, you can press Alt+` to switch between them. It’s a more focused alternative to the Alt+Tab shortcut, which shows open windows from all applications and can be quite cluttered.

The Window Hopper utility is part of PowerToys version 0.101, which launched a few days ago. After installing the latest version, simply open PowerToys and toggle the Window Hopper option. You can customize Window Hopper’s keyboard shortcut, too.

According to Microsoft:
PowerToys Window Hopper lets you cycle between windows that belong to the app currently in focus. Unlike Alt+Tab, which cycles through windows from all apps, Window Hopper limits the selection to the focused app.

Cycle between app windows
To cycle forward through the windows of the focused app, hold Alt and press `. Window Hopper shows previews of the app's open windows and selects the next window. Continue pressing ` while holding Alt to move through the windows, and then release Alt to switch to the selected window.

To cycle backward, hold Shift+Alt and press `. Continue pressing ` while holding Alt to move backward, and then release Alt to switch to the selected window.

Press Esc before releasing Alt to close Window Hopper without switching windows. Window Hopper doesn't open when the focused app has fewer than two eligible windows.

This utility is part of the Microsoft PowerToys utilities for power users. It provides a set of useful utilities to tune and streamline your Windows experience for greater productivity, download here
