Fring is a mobile app that supports text chat, voice, and video calls on the iPhone. There’s an Android client too, but it only supports voice and chat. And as if the iPhone version weren’t already ahead in the features department, CNET reports that Fring is about to up the game by offering 2-way video calls.
Right now, you can see the person you’re talking to on Fring, but they can’t see you. That will soon change, and CNET has a few screenshots of an upcoming version of Fring that will let you see who you’re talking to and send them video (or maybe just a picture) of yourself.
It’s not entirely clear how this is supposed to work, since the iPhone doesn’t have a front-facing camera. In other words, it seems like you can either look at the person you’re talking to, or they can look at you — but there’s no easy way to do both at the same time. On the other hand, being able to walk down a street, or through the grocery store aisle while sharing the things you see with the person you’re talking to might be useful.
The upcoming version of Fring will also have a stream of your contacts’ recent activities on sites including Facebook, Twitter, and Fring.
