Volume buttons, battery life join signal worries
A well-known reception flaw is not the only problem affecting owners of the iPhone 4 and other iOS 4 devices this week. Some individual iPhone 4s are reported to be shipping with swapped volume buttons, making for some initial confusion. At the moment, the only way of solving the issue may be to ask a vendor for a replacement.
Some other iPhone 4s are reportedly warning that no SIM
1 card is installed in spite of the opposite being true. The error has affected other iPhones in the past however, and may potentially be fixed simply by removing and then reinserting the micro SIM. Failing this, AT&T may be able to supply a replacement card, though the remedy has not been consistently successful.
People upgrading earlier iPhones to iOS 4 are claiming
considerable battery drain, to the extent that life may drop noticeably in the space of minutes. The exact causes are unknown, and may in fact vary from case to case. Some proposed solutions include resetting network settings, resetting or disabling automatic mail and sync services, or just closing as many background apps as possible. Previous iOS releases have also hurt battery life for some people though, which could mean that the cause is a firmware bug.
Still other iOS 4 problems are said to include ones with
weak or unavailable Wi-Fi, and various
calendar issues such as outdated appointments being
suddenly resurrected2. Some iOS errors may be fixed when Apple delivers a promised update.
