The Woz Tangles with iPhone 4's Reception Issues
« on: July 16, 2010, 05:08:08 AM »

He may dance with the stars, Segway instead of walk and play with Apple's new hotness while we we're condemned to stand in line and wait, but when it comes to the pain caused by the reception issues associated with the iPhone 4, Steve "I co-founded Apple" Wozniak is as much of a victim to the same dropped calls and slow page loading times as the rest of the unwashed masses.

According to Gizmodo, in an interview with Dutch journalist and tech entrepreneur Henk van Ess, The Woz, upon hearing the tales of the iPhone's poor reception and how the issues can be linked to how the handset is held, started tinkering to see if he could duplicate the issue.

"The first time I tried I was able to duplicate the problem," said Wozniak. "My wife was driving me to the airport and as soon as I got a short distance from my home, and no longer on wifi, I tried it by accessing a web page (using Safari on my iPhone 4) and observing the progress bar. As the bar started to proceed I lightly (‘lightly') touched a couple of fingers to the trouble area and the progress bar froze. When I lifted my fingers the progress bar continued it's (sic) rapid progress. Putting my finger(s) back down halted the progress bar again. Lifting my fingers another time allowed the web page to finish loading."

Wozniak told van Ess that he concluded that the effect only occurs in some places, saying that the experience was like "the AT&T dead zone has been extended to this new phone." Having cited the issues he found with the iPhone 4, Wozniak was also quick to offer a make-shift solution as well.

"If you can afford it, carry a second Verizon phone for backup. Another option is to carry a Verizon mifi and rely on Skype on your iPhone."
