iPhone Tethering for just 99 cents
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:15:06 AM »

A new flashlight app for the iPhone managed to bypass Apple’s approval process and included a hidden SOCKS Proxy allowing tethering. Handy Light, is a flashlight application that can be found in the app store however the description provides no details about the hidden feature. The developer of the app, Nick Lee, posted a YouTube video with instructions on how to activate the hidden SOCKS Proxy. The first application to offer a hidden proxy was NetShare in 2008, and Apple was quick to removed the application from the App Store.

However, users who managed to buy the application before Apple remove it, reporting that NetShare still works. Based on that, users who download Handy Light should expect the app will continue to work after Apple removes it from the App Store (unless there is some kind of change on the iOS level). Users can download Handy Light from the App Store for $0.99 (for as long it is still available). For reference, AT&T charges $20 per month to enable tethering for the iPhone. The video with instructions on how to activate SOCKS Proxy with Handy Light app, can be found below.
