You can rest assured Stanford University is NOT GIVING these to the students.  I bet the students are paying dearly for them. The reason I say this is 1. Universities don't give students anything, and 2. There is a Dental school here in San Francisco that issues laptops to all the dental students and this laptop costs $5000.00 and it is a Dell of all things.

In one more demonstration that iPad is not just a home gadget, the School of Medicine at Stanford University has adopted Apple’s tablet, providing the device to all incoming first year medical students and Master of Medicine students. The University said that the iPad “creates opportunities for efficient, mobile, and innovative learning”. iPad allows students to view and annotate course content electronically, facilitating advance preparation as well as in-class note-taking in a highly portable, sharable and searchable format. In the future, students will be able to easily access high-quality information at any place, at any time (for example, images from textbooks on digital course reserve, image databases, journal articles, Lane Library’s various search tools, etc.). In addition, Stanford sees the move as a opportunity to promote a green environment. “Replacing printed syllabi with PDFs is in line with the Sustainable Stanford initiative, which aims to build sustainable practices into every aspect of campus life,” the University said. Recently we have seen iPads being used in the military and health care.
