as the GSM (AT&T) version

According to an antenna design expert, Apple will not change the design of iPhone 4 when the company introduces a Verizon device. Spencer Webb, an antenna engineer with nearly a dozen patents to his credit, said that a CDMA version of iPhone 4 will have the same design and same antenna like the GSM (AT&T) version. ”The antenna could care less what the modulation technique is.

CDMA is a spread-spectrum technology with a broader-based signal than GSM. But CDMA isn’t so broad that it makes a difference to the antenna,” Webb said. The engineer also said that Apple probably will not have time to redesign the antenna if the device comes out January as rumored.

”I’ve called Apple’s antenna design ‘bold’ and ‘risky,’ but they won’t change it [for a CDMA-based phone]. The antenna design is architecturally fixed in the design, and it would take them a while to make whatever the next design is,” Webb said. Webb also dismissed the idea of coating the antenna to fix the issue. “There’s no coating that’s thick enough to make a difference,” Webb said.
