File Manager for iPad
« on: August 25, 2010, 02:18:59 AM »
For the last week I have been getting to know my iPad and all the things it could and could not do. As I sat in a meeting on Friday with my iPad, I determined that the iPad could not replace my need for a laptop. I say this because during the meeting I needed to bring up a document on our Windows Small Business server and the iPad could not deliver. However, after searching the app store tonight, that all changed with an application called File Browser.

With File Browser you can access a variety of servers and computers right from your iPad. What makes File Browser different than other applications I have tried is that it does not require you to install any remote software on another computer. File Browser operates like Windows Explorer on a PC and Finder on MACS. By entering in your server’s address, you will have the ability to not only view the files and folders on the server but also copy them to your iPad. Through the File Browser application you can create local folders on your iPad to better manage your documents.

Once they are on your iPad, you can move them between local folders, email it as attachment, open it with a variety of applications (for instance a .doc file will give you then option to open up in Pages) or delete the file from your iPad. It seems that File Browser supports most servers but before you purchase I would suggest checking out the developers site to confirm your server is supported. For business users this is an essential application that should be front and center on your iPad. File Browser is $2.99 and can be downloaded at the App store.
