PowerAMP may be the best music player for Google Android yet
« on: November 02, 2010, 04:40:49 PM »

Google Android ships with a perfectly functional music player that lets you get to your music quickly, view album art, handle playlists, and do a few other basic things. But it’s a bit barebones, which has led to a proliferation of third party music players for Android. Many feature a more attractive layout than the default music app. Some, like Winamp and doubleTwist try to differentiate themselves by allowing you to synchronize your music collection with your desktop. Others, like PowerAMP just go over the top throwing virtually every feature you could ever want in a music player.

PowerAMP has an attractive user interface with nice large buttons for handling music playback. There are also three different themes/color schemes to choose from. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few other features that make PowerAMP special:

Graphic equalizer
Support for MP3, MP4, M4A, FLAC, OGG, WAV, WMA, other audio formats
10 different presets, including a special preset for phone speakers
Big buttons for controlling bass, treble, and volume
Detailed file info box that shows you album, artist, genre, release date, and details about the bitrate, sample rate, and other file settings
Choose what screen to display on program startup
Select which folders your music is stored in
Select song sort order
Choose whether to download album art, and enable downloads only over WiFi
Customized click, play, shuffle actions
Headset options
Last.fm scrobbling
Lock Screen widget
Customizable UI

PowerAMP is currently available as a free trial download from the Android Market. The app is still basically a beta, but it’s already one of the best music players available for Android. Eventually the developer will issue an update allowing users to purchase the app.

The app runs on Google Android 2.1 and up.
