Upgrading from Windows 8 Release Preview to Windows 8 Pro
« on: October 11, 2012, 04:09:09 PM »
I have been using Windows 8 Release Preview as my sole operating system for some time now. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro.

I tried to install from the DVD after changing the Boot option in the BIOS. But it would not boot from the DVD. The message to "Press any key to boot from DVD" did not come up. After trying a few times I gave up.

The I tried the Set Up from inside the system. It started smoothly and upgraded the system.:) The only option was to retain the personal files which I exercised.

While it was setting up windows 8, the computer restarted a number of times and the message to "Press any key to boot from DVD" came up.

Activation was automatic.

BTW there is an option to get more features with a new edition of Windows. When I clicked it it asked for a Key. When I gave the key I was using, it said that is not sufficient. What are these new features?

Glad you were able to get W8Pro installed.

The new features primarily deal with the "Personalization" section in the "Settings".  It unlocks various unlock screens, background screens, and allows the user to add their own screen.

If when using W8RP you had signed in with your MS Account and set these "Personalization" preferences when signing into W8Pro they would still be set.

Lets us know you likes and dislikes and any challenges (ir the learning curve) you endured in using Windows 8 so far.

One of the big issues in downloading Windows 8 is the issue of download. The download from Microsoft gets corrupted. This is especially true when the download speed is low. This happened with Windows 7 as well. In fact both with Windows 7 as well as Windows 8 I had to depend on Torrent sites. I have posted about this in this forum.

I wonder why Microsoft can not allow download via Bit torrent. Downloading will become a huge problem when Windows 8 is launched on October 26.

Only a 64 bit Windows 8 is available now. Will there be a 32 bit on launch date?

The biggest problem in upgradation is the working of devices. Graphic cards come out with the latest drivers. I have got the driver for my Graphics card. But when it comes to Scanners and Printers we are totally helpless. Canon refused to issue drivers even for Windows 7 for their scanners. All old scanners have become totally useless. Sound Cards. Creative refuses to support any of their old cards. The same case with Printers. You locate a driver and then get shocked when it is clearly stated that old models are not supported.

Upgradation of the operating system becomes a very expensive proposition if we have to buy new Scanner, Sound Card and Printer.

From what you stated.
1. you set the bios to have DVD/CD as 1st boot option.
2. the DL from M$ is as stated "UPGRADE" only.
3. also when you download from a slow speed, the basic thing to remember is "multi tasking" can cause problems with slow speeds.
4. also when you burnt the DVD - M$ will and has always stated .... burn at the slowest rate possible then verify...
4a. if you verify you know the burn is good...
5. I always recommend on new DLs that you burn to USB (why if the burn is corrupt) you can format and nothing wasted...
6. The "Upgrade Assistant" which most people run to get there DL from M$ reads what you are "currently using"  if x64 then you get the x64 edition.
if x86 you get the x86 edition... (I am/was a "Upgrade Assistant" Beta tester....)
7. Both x86 and x64 Editions are available.. (I have both) they are available...
8. Some devices that are "OLDER" the manufactures have not obligation to furnish Drivers for the latest OS's.
8a. The Operator needs to "move to the SETUP" and change to "Install in XP SP3" mode.... that is called changing "Compatibility"
8b. doing this can extend the life of your "OLD" devices for a very long time.... I have "Upgraded" several XP systems to Windows 8. and
so far have not "Lost" the ability to use any "DEVICE".
I have also "Upgraded" 1 NetBook 1.4gb DDR memory Acer AOA-150 (XP ONLY per manufacture) to Windows 8 Pro....
9. The $15.00 and $40.00 editions (if I remember right) are UPGRADE ONLY.
the $70.00 edition is Bootable...
10. Just like other Windows OS's if you have the "knowledge" you can convert your "UPGRADE Only" media  to a "BOOTABLE" media.

The only STUPID Question is the one you never asked.

You can not make old devices work either in Windows 7 or Windows 8 by using compatibility mode. The devices need drivers. The drivers can not be installed in compatibility mode. Then even when you are able to locate a driver, it is in Beta and digitally not signed. So it can not be installed in Windows 8. I found a work around for installing such non-digitally signed drivers recently.

Take for example Canon Scanner LIDE 30

We are not talking about a 10 years old scanner, but a scanner which was being sold even in 2009.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_lide_30

But Canon never released a driver even for Vista 64 bit.

There is no way you can make the scanner work in Windows 7 or Windows 8.

From what you stated.
1. you set the bios to have DVD/CD as 1st boot option.

I read that by first installing the canoscan lide 30 vista driver... Then Windows 7 says there is a compatability issue and said it should reinstall it. People are syaing this procedure works on this printer.  Possibly this method might work on Windows 8 too.

have a look at this thread

Good Luck!

Tried all kind of work arounds without success. Then I saw that there is a commercial software available which will scan from any scanner. Yes. It does.

Two problems.

1. The software cost $40.

2. The scanner installs a Twain driver which is not digitally signed. This was not a problem with Windows 7 where you could override the objection. With Windows 8 it just does not install it. But there is a work around in the Advanced Boot up configuration.  Started Windows 8 in “Disable Driver Signature Enforcement” mode" and installed the software.

Problem solved.

I have the Canoscan N67OU that I bought in 2002, I Downloaded the latest drivers from the Cannon web site, The newest was for Vista/XP, so I ran them in Vista mode, everything works fine. They do have have drivers those same drivers for your CanoScan LiDE 30 Just dl them, right click/Properties/Compatabilty and run them in Vista mode. It worked for me:)

There are no drivers for Windows Vista 64 Bit. I have posted this on the internet in 2009 when I installed Windows 7 64 Bit. There is no solution. I have wasted a lot of time looking into all suggestions and work arounds.
